Prosecutor’s Office provides new details on investigation into death of Ludmila Vartic
The General Prosecutor’s Office has provided new information on the progress of the criminal investigation into the death of Ludmila Vartic, which occurred on 3 March 2026.
According to prosecutors, the criminal case was initiated on 9 March 2026 by Hîncești Police Inspectorate on the charge of domestic violence. Subsequently, the case was taken over by Râșcani Police Inspectorate in Chișinău, by order of the Prosecutor General.
To investigate the case, a joint criminal investigation team was set up, consisting of prosecutors from Chișinău Municipal Prosecutor’s Office and Hîncești Prosecutor’s Office, as well as criminal investigation officers.
According to the forensic medical report, the victim’s death was caused by severe trauma and multiple fractures of internal organs. Specialists determined that the injuries are characteristic of a fall from height, were produced simultaneously, and are directly connected to the death.
According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, several witnesses have been heard, relevant documents and objects have been seized, and additional on-site examinations have been carried out.
Prosecutors have also ordered several expert analyses, including graphological, graphoscopic, physico-technical, and IT examinations, targeting the mobile phones of the victim, the suspect, and the witnesses.
The General Prosecutor’s Office notes that further on, after the necessary evidence is collected, a psychological-psychiatric examination, including a post-mortem one, is to be carried out in order to clarify the circumstances of the case.
Prosecutors noted that the investigations are ongoing and additional information will be communicated depending on the progress of the inquiry and the evidence.
Ludmila Vartic, a kindergarten teacher in Hîncești, died after allegedly jumping from a block of flats in Chișinău on 3 March. The woman is believed to have been subjected to violence for many years by her husband, Dumitru Vartic, who, at the time of his wife’s death, was serving as deputy president of the Hîncești district.
The General Police Inspectorate has initiated two criminal proceedings in connection with the death of Ludmila Vartic. The first case concerns the circumstances of the woman’s death, while the second investigates the family situation. Dumitru Vartic has the status of suspect in the case of his wife’s suicide.
