Faster border crossing in Moldova: Entry/Exit System (EES) to be implemented also at Lipcani–Radauti Prut checkpoint

The European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) became operational at the Lipcani–Radauti Prut border crossing point starting from January 9.

The EES applies only to citizens of non-EU countries who make short stays on the European Union territory, of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. For each non-EU citizen entering Romania through the already operationalized points, the system records the date and place of entry and exit, collects alphanumeric and/or biometric data (facial image and four fingerprints), and automatically calculates the duration of legal stay.

The implementation of the system aims to replace the manual stamping of travel documents, without changing existing freedom-of-movement rights. During the transition period (approximately 6 months), passports will continue to be stamped manually.

At the first entry after the system becomes active, data is collected, while on subsequent trips, the verification will be carried out automatically, reducing waiting times at the border.

Presently, the Entry/Exit System is already operational at the Costesti–Stanca, Giurgiulesti–Galati and Cahul–Oancea border crossing points.
