Former MP of Moldova sentenced to eight years of imprisonment in file on illicit enrichment, influence peddling

A former MP, Constantin Tutu, has been sentenced to eight years of imprisonment in a semi-closed penitentiary and a fine of 450,000 lei in the file of illicit enrichment and influence peddling. The magistrates of the Chișinău Court, Buiucani office, today pronounced the ruling in the absence of Constantin Tutu.

By the same court decision, the former MP was also deprived of the right to hold public office or positions of public dignity for a period of five years. The sentence will be calculated starting from January 27, this year.

The ruling can be appealed at the Chisinau Court of Appeal, Central office, within 15 days. Until the decision becomes final, preventive arrest has been applied to Constantin Tutu.

Likewise, Under the ruling, Constantin Tutu was acquitted on one count of the indictment, while on three other episodes he was found guilty; the statute of limitations had expired in two of these episodes. The former parliamentarian was investigated for influence peddling and illicit enrichment. Initially, his cases reached the judges in May 2020 and November 2021; afterwards they were later merged into a single case, which was examined by the Chisinau Court, Buiucani office.

Constantin Tutu was detained together with the former leader of the Democratic Party, Vladimir Plahotniuc, at the Athens Airport on July 22, 2025.  After spending several weeks in detention in Greece, he was released and reached the Transnistrian region, after which he was declared wanted. On October 2, 2025, the former MP presented himself at a crossing point of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border and was arrested.
