Increased support for families in Moldova: birth allowance reaches 21,866 lei

Over 33,000 children last year benefited from the one-time birth allowance, which has been increased to 21,866 lei as of January 1, 2026. The Labour and Social Protection Ministry today presented data to this effect, on the occasion of International Children’s Day, annually marked on June 1.

According to the institution, in 2025, the one-time birth allowance was granted for 33,411 children, with the authorities saying that the measure is aimed at supporting families and reducing child poverty.

The Ministry specified that, since October 2022, each child up to the age of two had been receiving a monthly care allowance of 1,000 lei, regardless of whether the parents are insured or not. In 2025, this benefit was granted for 64,696 children. At the same time, another 33,221 children benefited from the monthly child-raising allowance up to the age of three.

The authorities noted that, starting July 1, 2025, the duration of paternity leave had been extended to 15 calendar days, which can be used within 12 months from the child’s birth. In 2025, 4,388 fathers benefited from this right. The leave can be requested in full or in three installments of five days each.

Also, since January 1, 2024, child-related benefits, with the exception of the paternity allowance, have been granted proactively by the National Social Insurance House, without requiring parents to submit an application.

Under the National Programme, Public nursery services – Employed parents, children in nurseries, third edition, 155 new nursery groups are to be created or rehabilitated. According to the ministry, they will be able to accommodate over 3,100 children and will help approximately 6,000 parents return to or remain active on the labour market.

Also, starting in 2026, all children with disabilities of Moldova will receive an additional annual payment of 3,000 lei, on top of the social allowance. The measure targets over 13,580 children.

The Ministry also announced that Children’s Consultative Councils would be created in each territorial social assistance structure, in order to involve minors in decision-making processes that concern them.

Children whose rights are being infringed can call the Child Helpline service free of charge and anonymously, available around the clock at 116 111 or via the dedicated online platform.

Labour and Social Protection Minister Natalia Plugaru said that investments in children and families represented “investments in the future of Moldova”.
