Judge assaulted inside Chisinau Court; Superior Council of Magistracy labels incident as attack on justice

A judge has been assaulted by a litigant inside the Chisinau Court, an incident described as serious and inadmissible in a state governed by the rule of law. The case prompted a reaction on behalf of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), which strongly condemned what had happened.

According to the CSM, an attack on a judge represents not only aggression against an individual, but also a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary and the authority of the judicial branch. The Council emphasizes that the safety of judges is essential for the proper work of the judicial system, given that they exercise duties of high complexity and responsibility.

The CSM reiterates that judges must carry out their activity in a safe environment, free from pressure, threats or acts of violence, warning that such incidents severely undermine public trust in justice and democratic values.

In the context, the Council reiterates the need to create a Judicial Police force, a subject previously discussed at an institutional level, considered an important measure for strengthening the security of courts and the act of justice. At the same time, the CSM calls on political and institutional actors to treat this issue with the utmost seriousness and to identify urgent solutions to prevent similar situations.

The Superior Council of Magistracy has expressed its support for the judge concerned and reaffirmed its commitment to defending the independence of the judiciary, the dignity of the judicial profession and the fundamental values of a democratic society.
