Moldova celebrates officially International Women's Day
Chisinau, 8 March /MOLDPRES/- Moldova together with several states in the world celebrates today the International Women’s Day. On this occasion, under a governmental decision, the employees in the country will have a mini-vacation until 11 March.
The International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 8 March to mark both women’s social achievements, policies and economic conditions, and to highlight the discrimination and violence. This holiday was adopted in 1977 through a United Nations General Assembly resolution.
The Women’s Day was first celebrated on 28 February 1909 in New York, in memory of a strike of a women’s union that took place in 1908. Then, 15,000 women marched in New York asking for a shorter work schedule, better wages and the right to vote. In 1910, following a Copenhagen Workers’ Conference, it was decided that Women’s Day would be celebrated all over the world, 8 March was chosen only in 1913.
“This celebration gives us the opportunity to convey to you thoughts of admiration and gratitude. Thanks for your devotion and power, for your kindness and dedication in all you do. I wish you to enjoy your wonderful holiday. Today and every day, have your loved ones by your side, success, health and achievements!” Prime Minister Pavel Filip said in a congratulatory message.
On 8 March, the International Women’s Day is celebrated in 60 states, in some countries being declared by law day off. As a rule, women and girls get presents, flowers or other attention.
