Moldova's Prosecutor General's Office sends official extradition request for Vladimir Plahotniuc

The Prosecutor General's Office (PG) today sent the extradition request for Vladimir Plahotniuc to the Greek authorities. He has been recently detained in Greece, based on an international search alert issued by Interpol.

Plahotniuc is prosecuted in Moldova for the committing of serious offenses, including creating and leading a criminal organization, large-scale fraud and money laundering.

“The documents sent include all necessary materials to support the request, in accordance with the provisions of the 1957 European Convention on Extradition (Paris Convention) and applicable criminal procedure rules. The PG expresses confidence that, based on the commitments made in international judicial cooperation, the Greek authorities will respond to the request sent, in order to bring the concerned person to justice,” the Prosecutor General's Office said.

The extradition procedure starts once the requesting state sends the extradition request to the requested state, where the searched person was arrested.

The former leader of the Moldovan Democratic Party, Vladimir Plahotniuc, was detained by the Greek authorities at the Athens International Airport on July 21, shortly before boarding a flight to Dubai. Former MP Constantin Tutu was also detained alongside him.
