New rules for equipping Ministry of Internal Affairs structures adopted by MPs

Today, MPs approved in second reading a draft law aimed at streamlining the process of equipping the authorities subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI).

The document provides for amendments to five normative acts regulating the activity of the General Police Inspectorate, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the Border Police and the General Inspectorate of Carabinieri, as well as a revision of the Law on the prevention and combating of terrorism.

Currently, the equipment standards for these institutions are set by the Government, and any modification requires adjustments to the relevant normative acts, which can cause delays and affect the activity of the structures subordinated to the MAI.

The new provisions grant the Ministry of Internal Affairs the authority to approve the technical and material supply standards, at the proposal of the heads of the institutions. At the same time, the heads of the inspectorates will be able to set the equipment standards for their subordinate subdivisions.

The draft law also extends certain responsibilities of the Police, the Border Police and the MAI in areas such as information system management, counter-terrorism and civil aviation security.
