Orthodox Christians celebrate Annunciation

Orthodox Christians today celebrate the Annunciation, one of the most important religious holidays in the Orthodox calendar. This day marks the announcement to the Virgin Mary, by the Archangel Gabriel, of the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ.

Special services are held in churches throughout Moldova and believers gather to celebrate this event with prayers and fasting. In popular tradition, this day is believed to bring blessings and divine protection for the entire community.

In religious life, the Annunciation signifies a moment of closeness to the divinity  and of reaffirmation of faith. Beyond the religious aspects, this day is also an opportunity to reflect on the role of women in religion, with the Virgin Mary being a symbol of purity and unconditional devotion.

In the folk calendar, this feast is also called Blagoveštenie and is considered a holiday of transition from "death" (winter) to "life" (spring). It marks the boundary between winter and spring, when nature begins to be reborn.
