VIDEO // French language and Francophone values celebrated in Parliament of the Republic of Moldova

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova marked International Francophonie Day today, celebrating not only the French language, but also the values, culture, and solidarity of the Francophone community.

During the plenary sitting, MP Marcela Adam, Chair of the Moldovan section of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie, delivered a congratulatory message and underlined the authorities’ commitment to supporting the French language and Francophone values.

She noted that La Francophonie represents a community of states and peoples that promote cooperation, education, and the exchange of ideas. In the Republic of Moldova, over 100,000 students study French in more than 900 schools and lyceums across the country.

“On the occasion of the International Day of La Francophonie, I extend my most sincere congratulations to all those who are part of this community of language, culture, and ideals. We thank the teachers, pupils, students, diplomats, and people of culture who keep the French language alive in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Marcela Adam.

For entire generations of citizens of the Republic of Moldova, the French language remains not only a school subject, but also an open window to freedom, culture and diversity of the world.

“Hundreds of thousands of Moldovans who have gone abroad manage to make their voices heard and understood thanks to the French language and La Francophonie. This is part of our cultural and academic openness, of our European vocation, and of our attachment to the values of democracy and the rule of law. The French language is present not only in schools and universities, but also in cultural institutions, in diplomacy, and in the international partnerships that we have built over time. I must mention that the Republic of Moldova joined the Francophone Movement in 1993, and since November 1997 it has been a member of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, which brings together 82 states and governments. The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova is an associate member of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie, a community that promotes peace, solidarity, and respect for diversity. This demonstrates our commitment to international cooperation and ongoing dialogue with the French Republic and the entire Francophone world. I am convinced that, through La Francophonie, Moldova is becoming more democratic, more open, and more tolerant. For our country, La Francophonie represents an open gateway to Europe,” the MP concluded.

The event is celebrated annually on 20 March around the world, to highlight the French language and Francophone culture – a global community of people and states that share this language and common values such as peace, democracy, cultural diversity, and solidarity. In many countries, including the Republic of Moldova, 20 March is marked through educational, cultural, and diplomatic events that showcase the French language and Francophone ties at both local and international levels.
