Farmers in four districts obtained compost through organic farming program
Chisinau, 17 Dec. / MOLDPRES /. Small farmers from six villages in Falesti, Floresti, Soroca and Soldanesti districts were chosen with five hundred tons of compost as natural fertilizer. The compost was obtained from seven hundred tons of manure and vegetable waste, collected by farmers involved in a pilot composting program.
Under this program, 93 farmers collected organic waste from their households, from the garden and from animals, and members of the cooperative of organic producers EcoFerm collected and transported this waste on specially arranged land (composting platforms) in the villages of Cuhureștii de Sus, Ghindești, Văscăuți, Olișcani, Rublenița and Logofteni.
With the help of composting equipment and respecting the technology of composting, the collected material went through a fermentation process, to finally be transformed into organic fertilizer. The members of the "EcoFerm" organic producers' cooperative distributed the compost obtained to the farmers involved in the composting program, in proportion to the volume of waste offered at the collection stage.
The composting program is part of the Acting for Innovation through Innovation project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program (SGP) through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Moldova. The activities of the project were carried out by the Czech Foundation People in Need Moldova in partnership with the Employers' Association Alliance of the Value Chain in Organic Agriculture of Moldova (MOVCA) and the cooperative of organic producers EcoFerm.
According to Silvia Bicenco, country director at People in Need Moldova, efforts to explain to farmers the benefits of using compost and encourage them to give up chemical fertilizers in favor of organic fertilizers are now visible. "We have almost a hundred small farmers, convinced that soil fertility can be improved by compost, obtained from organic waste, which inevitably accumulates in every household. We want to see as many farmers as possible interested in organic farming and environmentally friendly agricultural technologies ", says Silvia Bicenco.
The project Acting eco through innovation will be completed in February 2022.
