
Moldovan opera singer would have turned 86 today
Chisinau, 3 August /MOLDPRES/- Opera singer Maria Bieșu, People's Artist, winner of many national and international awards would have turned 86 today.
Maria Bieșu was born in 1935 in Volintiri village, Ștefan Vodă district. In 1956-1961 she studied at the State Conservatory in Chisinau. As a student, she sang in the “Fluieraș” Folk Music Orchestra (1958). In 1961 she became a soloist at the National Opera in Chisinau, on the stage of which she debuted in the role of Floria Tosca in the opera of the same name by G. Puccini (1962).
She attended the La Scala internship school in Milan with Enrico Piazza (1965-1967). Since 1980 she has been a teacher at the G. Musicescu Chisinau.
In 1967 she won first prize at the Miura Tamaki International Competition in Tokyo, Japan. In the same year she was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Republic of Moldova, and in 1970 she became a People's Artist of the USSR.
She has been a member of several juries of international competitions and festivals. Since 1983 she has been president of the Union of Musicians of Moldova. In 1990 she founded the Maria Bieșu International Festival, in which opera singers from several countries participate.
She passed away on 16 May 2012, buried at the Central Cemetery in Armenească Street in Chisinau.
