Over 375,000 people from Transnistrian region have Moldovan citizenship

As many as 375,044 individuals from the Transnistrian region, including the municipality of Bender, were registered in the national population register on June 30, 2025. These individuals are listed with domicile, temporary residence, or other forms of documentation in the national system. Among them, 354,718 are effectively residing on the left bank of the Dniester and Bender, and 347,161 hold Moldovan citizenship, with the remainder being foreign citizens, according to the Agency for Public Services (ASP).

ASP said that 264,692 individuals from the region held valid internal identification documents, and 232,669 have a valid Moldovan passport.

“During April 19, 2018-June 30, 2025, due to legislative changes that simplified the procedure for recognizing the Moldovan citizenship, 43,505 individuals officially acquired Moldovan citizenship. Of this total, 28,197 beneficiaries – approximately 65 per cent – are residents of the Transnistrian region who have already been documented with Moldovan documents. This data shows the continuous efforts of the Moldovan authorities to facilitate the integration of Transnistrian residents into the country's legal and administrative space, providing them with access to public services and fundamental rights,” ASP said.

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova – including those from the Transnistrian region – benefit from the advantages provided by the status of candidate country for EU accession: free movement in the EU area, access to educational, economic, and social opportunities, as well as the protection of fundamental rights guaranteed by the European framework.
