Moldovan well – known writer celebrates 91 years of age

Chisinau, 03 September /MOLDPRES/ – The writer, playwright and essayist, Ion Druta, Writer of the People, honorary member of the Romanian Academy and titular member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM), has celebrated 91 years of age, on Tuesday, 03 September.

Ion Druta was born in 1928 in village Horodiste, Soroca county, currently Donduseni district. He finished the School of forestry (1946) and Higher literature courses from the Institute M. Gorki in Moscow (1957).

He makes his editorial debut with volume: La noi in sat (1953), followed by Poveste de dragoste (1954). His works, gathered in eight volumes – Frunze de dor, Balade din campie, Ultima luna de toamna, Povara bunatatii noastre, Clopotnita, Horodiste, Intoarcerea taranii in pamant, Biserica alba, Toiagul pastoriei, etc. – being part of the gold fund of contemporary national literature.

In 1969 he settled in Moscow, writing in Romanian and Russian.

Since 1987, Ion Druta has been the honorary head of the Union of Writers of Moldova (USM), where he was unanimously elected at the Writers General Assembly. He has been decorated with more orders and medals, holds the title of People's Writer.

In 1967, Ion Druta wrote play: Casa Mare, novel: Ultima luna de toamna and novel: Balade din campie (the first part of dilogy: Povara bunatatii noastre). In the same year he was awarded the State Prize of the Moldovan RSS (RSSM). In 1990, he was elected honorary member of the Romanian Academy, and on 30 December 1992 – full member of ASM. He was included in the list of the ten writers in the world for 1990 (Moldova Literara from 26 July 1995).

In August 2008, Ion Druta was awarded the State Prize for his exceptional contribution to the development of national and universal culture and literature.

In September 2009, Ion Druta became the first knight of the Order Bogdan Intemeietorul. The then president of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, decorated Ion Druta with a deep gratitude for his special contribution to national rebirth, for merits in developing cultural relations with foreign countries and prodigious activity in order to increase internationally the prestige of Moldova.

The work of Ion Druta has been translated into dozens of languages.
