Germany reaffirms support for modernizing and strengthening Moldova's energy sector

Germany reaffirms support for modernizing and strengthening Moldova's energy sector. The position was expressed by Germany's Federal Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider, who met with Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu in Chișinău.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the two officials discussed strengthening Moldova's energy security, transitioning to renewable sources and increasing energy efficiency.

Junghietu presented the current situation of natural gas supply, highlighting that thanks to the operation of Iași–Ungheni–Chișinău gas pipeline, the country no longer depends on a single source of imported energy, having access to alternative markets. In this context, the important role of the Vertical Corridor was also pointed out, providing access to LNG from Greece and storage from Ukraine, thus diversifying supply sources and routes.

An important topic on the agenda was the electrical infrastructure. Junghietu reiterated the importance of completing Vulcănești–Chișinău 400 kV Overhead Electric Line – also known as Energy Independence Line – a project that will strengthen energy security and enable Moldova's integration into the European energy system. The completion of this line is planned by the end of the year.

Future projects were also discussed, including Bălți–Suceava 400 kV line, essential for full connection to the European energy market and Strășeni–Gutinaș line, intended to enhance energy flexibility for the import and export of electricity.

Junghietu emphasized the contribution of renewable sources in reducing electricity costs. He mentioned the success of recent auctions for renewable energy projects and highlighted the need to develop balancing capacities, such as battery storage. A concrete example in this regard is the new 50 MW photovoltaic plant in Rădeni, which was visited by the two ministers this afternoon.

In the long term, Moldova is considering expanding the energy mix by harnessing other renewable sources, such as biomass, biogas and geothermal energy.

Junghietu expressed gratitude for Germany's constant support in energy efficiency, both in the public sector through programs like INSPIREE – aimed at universities and hospitals – and in the residential sector. He appreciated the contribution of German partners, including GIZ and KfW Development Bank, in supporting sustainable energy projects.
