MIA Instant Payments System of Moldova exceeds 750,000 users, about 13 million transactions

The MIA Instant Payments System shows outstanding results with over 750,000 users, about 13 million transactions and a total volume exceeding 12 billion lei in  one year and a half after its launch. The figures have been unveiled by First Vice Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) Petru Rotaru, who participated in the Fintech Moldova Conference 2025, held in Chisinau.

“These figures clearly show that Moldovan citizens value speed and accessibility. And we are not only talking about individuals: entrepreneurs and companies are actively using this system created by the BNM. Today, over 3,300 merchants are connected to MIA, providing their customers with fast, modern and secure payment experiences,” said first vice governor of BNM.

In his speech, Petru Rotaru emphasized that BNM was constantly advancing in the field of financial technologies, focusing on the accessibility and quality of services provided to citizens and businesses – services that are faster, safer, more transparent and aligned with European standards.

At the same time, Petru Rotaru informed that “in a few days, integration into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) will become operational, opening a new chapter in the economic and financial development of Moldova.”

MIA Instant Payments was launched by BNM in March 2024 and is a service that allows users, individuals to pay and receive money in seconds, only based on the phone number, without a card image. Transfers are made between national bank accounts in Moldovan lei.

In late last July, the launch of P2G - Person to Government payments within the MIA Instant Payments system took place, an innovation that allows citizens to make immediate, secure and fee-free payments for over 120 public services, directly from mobile applications.

Also, BNM Governor Anca Dragu has recently informed that the MIA Instant Payment System would soon also be available for operations conducted between companies.
