Moldova and Israel launch strategic partnership for agricultural modernization

The agricultural sector in the Republic of Moldova will be modernized with Israel's support. A declaration of intent in this regard was signed on 3 September in Chişinău by Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) Ina Butucel and Minister of Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Avi Dichter.

The agreement includes the transfer of Israeli technology and expertise, known worldwide for its innovation. The document establishes a framework for developing joint projects, knowledge exchanges, and the implementation of advanced practices. Cooperation will focus on key areas such as efficient water resource management, adapting to severe climatic conditions, and introducing high-performance technologies to increase productivity and resilience in Moldova's agriculture.

“This memorandum is an essential framework for developing modern agriculture in the Republic of Moldova. We have much to learn from our Israeli partners’ knowledge, technologies, and sustainable practices to build an efficient, resilient agricultural sector designed to meet the needs of our population,” stated Ina Butucel.

In turn, the Israeli minister emphasized the practical nature of the partnership, noting that signing the document is just the first step.

“Our intention is to translate this declaration into concrete actions through exchanges of delegations and joint projects. Although we differ in territorial size and population, we have much to learn from each other to strengthen an agricultural sector that benefits both countries. We look forward to welcoming the Moldovan delegation to Israel to witness our innovations firsthand,” said Avi Dichter.

The partnership entails organizing reciprocal visits of experts and farmers, as well as developing training programs. By leveraging Israeli experience, Moldova aims to tackle current challenges such as climate change and the need for sustainable agriculture, transforming the sector into a more competitive and efficient one internationally.

One of the pillars of collaboration between Moldova and Israel is the export of Moldovan products to Israel. Ambassador Alexandr Roitman announced the signing of a declaration of intent at the beginning of 2025 during the Berlin International Green Week.

This offers Moldova priority in exporting agricultural products, particularly wheat, wines, apples, fresh tomatoes, and dried fruits. The cooperation includes Moldova gaining access to advanced agricultural know-how and technologies provided by Israel. Discussions particularly focus on the implementation of intensive agriculture, irrigation systems, and modern techniques that can enhance productivity and food security amid climate changes.

In 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi and his Israeli counterpart agreed to reactivate the Intergovernmental Commission for Commercial-Economic Cooperation. The aim is to boost reciprocal investments and joint projects in strategic sectors: technology, agriculture, health, and education.
