Moldova increases renewable energy production capacity 12-fold in last five years

Moldova has witnessed, in the last five years, a 12-fold increase in installed capacities of renewable energy sources - from 77.37 MW in 2020 to almost 1,000 MW at present.

According to the Energy Ministry, by the end of November 2025, the total installed capacity reached 957.76 MW, an increase of 24.95 MW from the previous month and 378.36 MW compared to the end of 2024.

Photovoltaic installations are the most widespread renewable energy technology, accounting for 690.33 MW or 72 per cent of the total, followed by wind energy - 243.52 MW (25 per cent). Hydro and biogas capacities amount to 23.91 MW, adding to the diversity of technologies used.

“State support mechanisms played a crucial role in this development. By November 2025, 8,512 prosumers have contributed to installing 188.17 MW through net metering and net invoicing. In total, 435.30 MW are installed through support mechanisms, representing 45 per cent of the total capacity,” the Energy Ministry said.

At the same time, 55 per cent of the renewable capacities (522.46 MW) sell energy on the free market, proving that producing energy from renewable sources is a viable and attractive economic activity for investors.

“The energy transition means more energy security, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and a sustainable future for Moldova,” the institution noted.

Authorities aim for ambitious goals in this field, with strategic targets set for 2030: at least 27 per cent of renewable energy in gross final consumption and at least 31.2 per cent of electricity from renewable sources in gross final electricity consumption.
