Moldovan electricity market operator starts registration of participants in organized electricity markets

The Moldovan electricity market operator (OPEM) has initiated the process of registering participants in organized electricity markets, the next day market – (NDM) and the intraday market – (IM).

This stage marks an important step in the operationalization of platforms managed by OPEM, aimed at ensuring transparency, efficiency and fair competition on the electricity market of Moldova, Energy Ministry said.

According to the cited source, the creation and operationalization of short-term electricity markets is necessary, in order to enable future coupling with neighboring electricity markets and, in particular, coupling with the European Single Day-ahead Coupling and Single Intraday Coupling (SDAC and SIDC).

The registration process is addressed to all entities interested in participating in electricity trading on markets managed by OPEM. Detailed information on the registration procedure, required documentation and deadlines can be consulted on OPEM's official website.

In accordance with the provisions of the Law on electric energy, the electricity market consists of the bilateral contracts market and organized electricity markets (namely the next day market – NDM and the intraday market - IM, the balancing electricity market and the system services market).

Ninety six companies of Moldova hold licenses for electricity supply, and currently, only three suppliers are active on the competitive/unregulated market, with a market share of 1.52, 0.14, and 0.34 per cent, respectively. According to estimates, after the launch of organized markets, the share of suppliers on the unregulated electricity market is expected to increase significantly.
