New EU project on production of eco seeds to be developed in Moldova
Chisinau, Dec. 7 / MOLDPRES / -EcoSeeds LuMo - From seed to shelf - an agricultural project, launched yesterday in the Republic of Moldova. It aims to support local farmers in the production of certified organic seed.
Thanks to the support of the European Union, the project is developed by the Institute of Biology and Agriculture of Luxembourg and the Scientific-Practical Institute of Horticulture and Food Technologies of Moldova, within the EU4 Business program.
"Organic farming and food systems are becoming increasingly important in the world, and since 2003 and until now, the dynamics of organic farming have been growing steadily. We want the farmers to carry out visits, research, exchanges of experience and identify alternatives for the application of more sustainable techniques for obtaining the quality of seed material through the project "From seed to shelf", Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Viorel Gherciu said.
The project activities will run until February 2022 and are focused on the development of Solanaceae plants, especially potatoes. The project also provides for the organization of seminars with the participation of teams of international experts and farmers from our country, to take the experience of cultivation, distribution, logistics and marketing of farmers in Luxembourg, as well as to identify techniques for adapting crops to drought.
In the Republic of Moldova, the foundations of the legislative-normative framework were laid with the adoption of the Law on organic agri-food production, followed by a series of normative acts. Subsequently, private control of organic farming was introduced, and organic agri-food production is certified by an inspection and certification body accredited in the EN 17065 system and recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.
