Two new EU-funded government programs launched in Moldova

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) Vladimir Bolea announced today the launch of two new government programs aimed at improving local infrastructure. It is about Europe is near program, dedicated to modernizing local roads nationwide, and European Yards in Chisinau municipality program, which provide for an initial allocation of 600 million lei from European funds.

'The Moldovan government is taking concrete actions to improve the lives of Moldovan citizens. The new programs are a direct response to the needs expressed by citizens and mayors during discussions, continuing local development efforts supported through previous European Village programs, which included over 1,600 projects nationwide', the official explained.

Europe is near program has an initial allocation of 500 million lei, coming from Moldova Plus budget, financed by the European Union. It aims to upgrade local roads and sidewalks, with the first 100 localities expected to benefit from funding for around 130 km of road infrastructure.

'Eligibility and allocations are structured. Thus, villages with up to 1,500 inhabitants can access up to 2 million lei. Villages with up to 1,500 inhabitants undergoing voluntary amalgamation can benefit from up to 5 million lei, without the need for co-funding. Localities with more than 1,500 inhabitants can receive up to 9 million lei, with a local contribution of 10%', Bolea said.

Decisions on project prioritization (new road construction, major repairs, sidewalks) will belong to local authorities, in consultation with citizens. The funding application period is from April 8 to May 12, 2025, through the platform used for the European Village program.

The second program, European yards in Chisinau municipality, has an initial budget of 100 million lei and addresses issues related to the condition of yards in the capital and suburbs. Five million lei will be allocated for each selected yard.

Vladimir Bolea emphasized the importance of these investments for increasing the quality of life and safety of citizens.

'Building roads, connecting street lighting, repairing schools and kindergartens, making our daily life much more comfortable and safe at home, this means building Europe at home. Moldova can build a beautiful country where you want to live and do not want to leave. Moldova can', Bolea said.
