Moldovan head of state has meeting with speakers of Baltic States' parliaments
President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with President of the Riigikogu of Estonia Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Daiga Mieriņa and Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas. It is the first time that the heads of parliament from the three Baltic states are undertaking a joint official visit to Moldova in this format, which represents a strong signal of support for the country’s European path.
The head of state highlighted the excellent relations with the three countries and their firm support for Moldova. The discussions focused, in particular, on the process of accession to the European Union.
The experience of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania clearly proves the benefits of European integration – strengthening democracy, accelerated economic development, higher living standards and efficient and transparent public institutions.
Economic data shows the success of these states’ European path. In Estonia, the average gross salary has increased more than fourfold, and GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita has grown 3.5 times. In Latvia, the average gross salary has almost quintupled, and GDP per capita has increased 2.5 times. Also, in Lithuania, the average gross salary has grown almost sevenfold and GDP per capita has increased fourfold.
The discussions also addressed the security situation in the region. President Maia Sandu expressed Moldova’s appreciation for the Baltic states’ solidarity with Ukraine. In this context, there was an exchange of views on ways to counter the risks generated by hybrid warfare, including cyberattacks, disinformation and external interference targeting democratic processes.
