Moldovan PM announces government's resignation
Chisinau, 23 December /MOLDPRES/ - Ion Chicu today announced his resignation from the office of prime minister and, implicitly, of the government, in order to launch snap parliamentary elections. Chicu made statements to this effect at a news briefing, following a joint meeting with acting President Igor Dodon and Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii. Ion Chicu also asked for a discussion with President-elect Maia Sandu, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
„This is a goal which we have everybody declared priority, in order to bring the country back to normal and allow our society solving the problems and developing in continuation. There are only two legal ways to launch the parliament’s dissolution and snap parliamentary elections; one of them is the government’s resignation. In these conditions, today I suggested to come up with the decision of resignation of the prime minister and, implicitly, of Moldova’s government. So that, this procedure can be started as soon as possible,’’ Ion Chicu said.
The PM noted that the participants in a 22 December cabinet meeting had approved the drafts necessary, so that the country, as of 1 January 2021, can work as normal, so that the annual budgetary laws be enforced, as well as the budgetary and fiscal policy: ‘’we took care that, once these cabinet decisions taken, there no further problems in financing the foremost needs and expenses of the state Republic of Moldova. Once these laws approved, the machine of the state system will be able to work; salaries, pensions, other social benefits, etc. could be paid.’’
Ion Chicu expressed confidence that today he would have a meeting with the president-elect, in order to discuss the acting government’s work in continuation, so that the functioning of the state institutions and the country, in general, can be ensured.
In his speech, the PM thanked the citizens for the understanding showed in the conditions of a difficult year, the colleagues from the governmental institutions, as well as the parliament speaker for institutional cooperation.
In the end, the prime minister congratulated Moldova’s citizens on the winter holidays and wished the country prosperity and well-being in the New Year 2021.
