PMs of Moldova, Qatar speak out for strengthening bilateral strategic partnership

Chisinau, 12 June /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita has had an official meeting with her Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani. The Moldovan delegation’s official visit comes in the context of marking the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Moldova and the State of Qatar, at an invitation by the Qatari prime minister, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.     

The officials discussed aspects related to the agenda of Moldova’s cooperation with the State of Qatar, we well as investment opportunities in Moldova. The sides tackled also the regional situation, in the context of the war in Ukraine. Gavrilita noted that Moldova needed solid support, in order to remedy the consequences and enhance its resilience.     

The Moldovan PM stressed that, despite the difficulties on this period, the attraction of foreign direct investments in the national economy remained a priority goal, the achievement of which would ensure the stability and resume the course of development in all sectors.   

The officials discussed subjects dealing with Moldova’s energy sector and the way of cooperation, in order to strengthen the country’s energy security, including through the creation of strategic reserves, investments in the renewable energy and diversification of the access to long-term energy sources.   

Natalia Gavrilita expressed admiration for Qatar’s achievements in the strengthening of the food security in the last several years. Thus, the sides agreed on cooperation in the agro-food sector both through exchange of experience and by boosting the cooperation in the private sector.    

The interlocutors also discussed the progress made by the State of Qatar in the backing of social sectors. In the context, Natalia Gavrilita enumerated Moldova’s needs in the education and health sectors, which might enjoy the Qatari support and experience both for Moldova’s citizens and for the integration of refuged children and families from Ukraine.    

Also today, the sides signed two bilateral agreements between Moldova and the State of Qatar: the Agreement on the abolition of the short-stay visas for the holders of ordinary passports and the Agreement on economic, technical and scientific cooperation in the agriculture sector.    

According to the officials, the documents signed will foster the economic contacts between the two countries.  

In the end of the discussions, Natalia Gavrilita congratulated her Qatari counterpart for the outstanding progress achieved by the State of Qatar in the economy field and wished him success in the organization of the first World Football Championship in an Arab state, due in late 2022.
