On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu delivered a message in memory of those who suffered as a result of this unimaginable tragedy.

“On 27 January we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust – a tragedy whose memory still fills us with horror today. Six million Jews were killed just because they were Jews, alongside Roma, people with disabilities, and others murdered simply because they were considered different. A tragedy that began with hatred, exclusion and complicit silence in the face of suffering,” the head of state noted.

Maia Sandu recalled that in 2026 it will be 85 years since the beginning of the Holocaust on the territory of our country, emphasizing that we do not have the right to forget those who were deported, humiliated, shot or left to die of hunger and cold. The head of state reiterated that a simple commemoration is not enough. “‘Never again’ is a daily responsibility for each of us – through rejecting hatred, defending human dignity, and having the courage to speak out against injustice,” Maia Sandu underlined.

During her visit to Strasbourg, today the official will take part in a ceremony dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, organized by the Council of Europe.
