National TV to broadcast in Russian too

A new draft law was registered on 12 March in Parliament, proposing that the National Television broadcast also in Russian to ensure access for Russian speakers to official and accurate information. The initiative belongs to PAS MPs Eugen Sinchevici and Natalia Davidovici.

According to the authors of the draft, the absence of a national channel in Russian has led to a situation where many citizens are exposed to propaganda and disinformation from obscure sources, controlled externally and aiming to undermine the state.

“Many Russian speakers are forced to seek information from sources promoting falsehoods and manipulations, especially during referendums and elections,” Sinchevici said.

He also gave an example of misinformation, noting that in Gagauzia, residents believe that Russia is the region's main donor, while the European Union has funded infrastructure, education and health projects.

The project's aim is to provide accurate and balanced information to all citizens, regardless of the language they speak.

They noted that this initiative is a new step towards strengthening social cohesion, providing equal access to government information, and promoting dialogue among all citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
