MPs pay tribute to World War II veterans

MPs gathered today in a session paid tribute to World War II veterans on the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism and nazism. Speaker Igor Grosu said that our grandparents and great-grandparents sacrificed themselves so that future generations could live in peace, freedom, and prosperity, and it is now our duty to defend these hard-won values and remain united in the service of all citizens.

"This year we mark 80 years since the end of World War II, the largest and most devastating armed conflict in human history. Today and every day, we pay tribute to those who gave their lives in that war. Our predecessors, grandparents, great-grandparents sacrificed themselves so that future generations could live in peace, freedom, and prosperity. It is our duty to defend these hard-won values and remain united in the service of all citizens," said Grosu.

Grosu spoke the names of each of the 25 veterans, amidst the applause of the deputies.

"I send a thought of gratitude to the World War II veterans. We wish them health and thank them for their courage and sincere desire for peace. Let us never forget their sacrifice," said Igor Grosu.

Additionally, he sent a message regarding the marking of Europe Day on 9 May.

"9 May is also Europe Day—a symbol of peace, unity, and cooperation among nations. This day reminds us of the importance of building a united Europe together, where the values of democracy, solidarity, and mutual respect are always defended," said Igor Grosu.

He invited citizens on May 9 to the Great National Assembly Square to participate in the events organized for Europe Day, with a call to celebrate peace and prosperity together.

"This year, you are also invited, dear colleagues, esteemed citizens, to the Great National Assembly Square, to celebrate Europe Day. Starting at 1:00 PM, you will have the opportunity to learn about the traditions, culture, and dishes of EU member states. Let us celebrate peace and prosperity together," he said.

The European village will be inaugurated at 1:00 PM, the event gathering activities dedicated to the culture and traditions of EU member states. The evening will culminate in a concert, which will begin at 7:00 PM. At 9:00 PM, the Parliament building will be illuminated in the colors of the EU.

On 9 May, Victory Day and Europe Day are marked in the Republic of Moldova.
