Nordic and Baltic countries support modernization of Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Moldova is benefiting from a new strategic project aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of eight Nordic and Baltic countries – Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to enhance cybersecurity and modernize crisis management infrastructure, to be completed by 2028.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Valeriu Mija highlighted the importance of the international support.

“Moldova's authorities fully recognize that modern skills and institutional crisis management capacities have become important elements of diplomatic interactions. We are very grateful to the eight Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as UNDP for the support in modernizing our institutional capacities in line with international and EU standards,” said Mija.

On behalf of the partner states, Søren Jensen, Danish Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova said that the project is part of the extensive support provided by the eight Nordic and Baltic countries to Moldova to enhance its resilience against hybrid attacks from Russia.

“Having secure digital systems and strong democratic governance are common goals. The security and resilience of Europe go hand in hand with the security and resilience of Moldova. We also support Moldova's path towards EU membership,” estimated Søren Jensen.

The initiative includes several key components.

“It involves developing a cybersecurity roadmap, with measures to modernize digital systems and strengthen information security; modernizing crisis management infrastructure, including renovating and equipping spaces dedicated to coordination in emergencies; Introducing standard operational procedures to ensure the continuity of diplomatic operations and efficient crisis coordination,” the ministry said.

The project is based on the memorandum of understanding previously signed by the foreign ministers of the eight Nordic and Baltic states during the visit to Moldova. It reflects their common commitment to supporting Chișinău in strengthening democratic institutions and preparing for European integration.

Through this initiative, the Republic of Moldova takes a crucial step towards diplomatic modernization and protecting its citizens, both domestically and abroad. The project not only strengthens institutional resilience but also reaffirms the consistent support of Nordic and Baltic partners for our country's European integration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
