Amendments to Civil Status Law

Citizens with an electronic signature will be able to request services online such as the registration of birth or marriage without needing to go to the Agency's counters. Documents will be available in digital format in the personal MCabinet and can be verified by an electronic code, including by foreign authorities. The amendments to the Civil Status Law have been promulgated by the presidential decree and will come into effect on November 1, 2025, as announced by the Public Services Agency (ASP).

According to the ASP, with these changes and the launch of the new "Civil Status Documents" Information System, the procedures for registering civil status events and issuing documents will be significantly simplified.

The law also eliminates the requirement for justification for registering marriages on an urgent basis. Furthermore, the procedure for changing the name or surname is simplified, including through electronic power of attorney, and parents are offered more options regarding the child's name.

A key element of the reform is interoperability: through the MConnect platform, public institutions will directly exchange data, reducing the need for citizens to present additional documents.
