Moldovan PM says over 620,000 households might benefit from energy compensation during this season

More than 620,000 households might benefit from energy compensation during the 2026–2027 cold season. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said that the government would increase the support mechanism, in order to cover more households than in the previous season.

The PM noted that, despite the initial intention to tighten the eligibility criteria for compensation, the current situation requires identifying additional resources to support a larger number of households.

“This winter, we will have to review the initial decision and increase the compensation compared with the initial plans. We must ensure that we cover a larger number of households. Last year, we covered 620,000 households and, most likely, this year the figure will be even higher,” said Vasile Tofan.

The prime minister said that the support provided to the population was necessary amid risks in the energy sector and the approaching cold season. According to him, the government will have to identify resources to maintain the support intended for consumers.

At the same time, the authorities are expected to finalize the mechanism for granting compensation for the new cold season. Labour and Social Protection Minister Natalia Plugaru has earlier said that the number of beneficiary households was expected to be approximately similar to the one of the previous season.

In recent years, the government has provided citizens with energy compensation through the Support at the Meter programme.
