Drone detected over Moldova; authorities temporarily close northern airspace

The Defence Ministry has announced that a drone today was detected flying over the territory of Moldova after crossing the state border from the direction of Mohyliv-Podilskyi (Vinnytsia, Ukraine) toward the village of Sauca, Ocnita district.

According to data provided by the National Army’s Air Operations Service, at 16:05, the unmanned aerial vehicle was noticed by local residents above the municipality of Balti, subsequently moving toward Ungheni district.

Later, at 16:19, the drone was detected by airspace surveillance systems in the locality of Lapusna, Hancesti district, and at 16:23 near the locality of Carpineni, in the same district, maintaining its flight direction toward the south of the country.

Monitoring of the trajectory continued until 16:26, when the drone disappeared from the radar near the locality of Mingir, Hancesti district.

The authorities specify that the airspace in the northern area was temporarily closed as a safety measure.

The Defence Ministry announced that it would provide additional information, as the situation continues to be monitored.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the airspace of Moldova has been violated by unauthorized overflights more than 40 times. The Moldovan authorities have submitted notes of protest to the designated ambassador of the Russian Federation, emphasizing that, although the drones do not directly target Moldova, their trajectories – associated with attacks on Ukraine – pose an increased risk to national security.
