EU extends sanctions by one year against those threatening Moldova's sovereignty

The European Union has decided to extend until 29 April 2026 the restrictive measures against individuals and entities responsible for actions undermining the sovereignty, independence and stability of the Republic of Moldova.

According to a statement from the Council of Europe, currently sanctions target 16 individuals and two entities whose assets are frozen and who are barred from accessing funds or economic resources from the EU. Additionally, those on the blacklist face a travel ban within the community area.

The decision comes in the context of the European Council's commitment, expressed at the summit on March 21–22, 2024, to support the Republic of Moldova in the face of challenges generated by Russia's aggression against Ukraine and attempts at destabilization by Moscow.

Restrictive measures were introduced in April 2023, upon request of Chisinau authorities, as a defense tool against external interference affecting democracy, the rule of law and national security.

The European Union maintains strong support for the Republic of Moldova and for its peace, resilience, security, stability, and economic growth in the face of destabilizing actions by external actors.
