Moldova to celebrate National Father's Day

Starting this year, the Republic of Moldova will celebrate National Father's Day. According to a decision voted by Parliament, this holiday will be marked on the last Sunday of June, recognizing the essential role of fathers in children's lives and family well-being. The initiative was approved by 70 deputies.

The legislative initiative belongs to a group of deputies from the Action and Solidarity Party faction and was presented in plenary by Vice President of Parliament Doina Gherman.

"Thus, we encourage, recognize, and value the father's role in family and society. Fathers influence the development of their children, and children influence the development of fathers. Men who report close, non-violent relationships with their children live longer, have fewer mental and physical health issues, are more productive at work, and report being happier than fathers who do not have such a connection with their children. Children with involved fathers are more likely to grow into successful adults, achieve high academic results, and have greater self-esteem. This day will be more than just a symbolic celebration. We create an educational and public policy tool to support a more equitable and harmonious society. Central and local public authorities are encouraged to support marking this day through awareness campaigns, cultural and educational activities. Congratulations to all fathers in the Republic of Moldova", said Gherman.

The lawmakers support that Father's Day will contribute to changing traditional perceptions of fatherhood, encouraging a modern and equitable model of family roles.

Doina Gherman invited colleagues from Parliament and all interested parties to participate in the first edition of National Father's Day, which will be celebrated on Sunday, June 29, with a public event organized in the Parliament square, between 10:00 and 12:00.

The event will be organized in partnership with UN agencies in Moldova - UNFPA, UN Women, UNICEF, and ILO - and with the support of the Child Rights Information and Documentation Center and the National Confederation of Trade Unions.

According to statistical data, in the last ten years, significant progress has been registered in the Republic of Moldova regarding fathers' involvement in family life. The percentage of those actively participating in raising and educating children has increased from 55% in 2014 to 68% in 2024.

Also, the percentage of men who believe household chores should be equally shared has increased from 30% to 55%, and the number of fathers caring for sick children has doubled in the last decade, reaching 33%.

Internationally, Father's Day is celebrated on different dates. For example, in Romania, this holiday is marked on the second Sunday of May. In Canada, the United Kingdom, and the USA, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June; in Australia and New Zealand - on the first Sunday of September; in Brazil - on the second Sunday of August, etc.
