Moldovan Environment Ministry says Dniester River's level under control

Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu today paid a field visit, alongside the leadership of the Moldova’s Waters National Agency, in order to assess the situation on-site and provide clarifications in the context of recent public information regarding a potentially dangerous drop in the Dniester River water level.

‘’Being a sensitive topic, we wanted to personally ensure that the water level is within normal parameters and provide citizens with accurate information,’’ the minister said.

According to the official, during July 16–20, the water flow in the Dniester River was temporarily reduced due to a technical malfunction at the Dubasari hydropower plant, which led to a local decrease in water level downstream.

Starting from July 21, the hydropower plant resumed normal operations with a flow rate of 120 m³/s, allowing the river to gradually return to its usual seasonal level.

To prevent similar situations amid the heatwave, the Moldova’s Waters National Agency asked Ukrainian authorities, which manage the Dnestrovsk hydropower plant, to maintain a flow rate of at least 130 m³/s, thus ensuring a stable hydrological regime.

The Environment Ministry assured that it would continue the strict monitoring of the country's rivers and water resources and would provide regularly updated and verified information to the public.

According to current measurements, the water level downstream of Dubasari is within normal parameters and all irrigation and water supply stations—including the one at Cosernita, which serves the Chisinau municipality—are operating without deviations.
