Moldovan infrastructure minister backs renaming Chisinau International Airport in memory of departed composer Eugen Doga

Moldova’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development supports the initiative to rename the Chisinau International Airport in memory of the departed composer Eugen Doga. Minister Vladimir Bolea said that he was ready to propose the idea at an official level.

"As a citizen, I fully support this and have a deep respect, and we all regret the passing away of Mr. Doga. Obviously, we know that such nice movement has begun in support of this genius of Moldova, and I am sure that, if we start to prepare a decision at the government, after discussing it publicly, we can move forward. I personally, as Minister of Infrastructure, support this idea. I consider it a very good one," said Vladimir Bolea.

The minister's statements come in the context of a petition launched by the head of the Unirea-ODIP Organization, Vlad Biletchi, requesting that the Chisinau International Airport bears the name of the late Eugen Doga. According to the initiator, the undertaking represents a gesture of recognition for the exceptional contribution of master Doga to promoting the culture and image of Moldova internationally.

The petition has been signed by over 580 people so far.

Eugen Doga, composer, professor, and academician, was one of the most remarkable figures of the national culture. Born on March 1, 1937, in the village of Mocra, Transnistrian region, he became world-famous through his music, especially through the waltz from the film, My Sweet and Tender Beast, considered by UNESCO to be a masterpiece of the 20th century.

Throughout his career, he composed over 200 soundtracks, symphonic works and chamber music, receiving numerous awards. Modest and close to people, Eugen Doga remained dedicated to art until the end. Master Eugen Doga passed away on June 3, 2025, at the age of 88.
