Moldovan parliament speaker asks law-enforcement institutions to explain stage of investigations in case of former head of national Army's General Staff

Chisinau, 6 June /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today asked the law-enforcement institutions to explain at what stage were the investigations as to the former of the National Army’s General Staff, brigade general Igor Gorgan. A message to this effect was conveyed in the beginning of a today’s plenary meeting of the parliament.   

The official noted that the subject was of national importance, as it regards the state’s security.

„On 5 June, we everybody followed the information which appeared in media about a former head of the General Staff. I ask the law-enforcement institutions, the ones with powers and which are involved in investigations to communicate more and explain at what point they are, as it is about the security of the state. The level of this office justifies the major interest of all citizens in this subject, especially in the current context which we experience,’’ Igor Grosu said.   

An investigation made public by The Insider today, referring to a correspondence from a social network of the former head of the National Army’s General Staff, Igor Gorgan, with his presumed trustee from Russia’s intelligence services, Aleksey Makarov, points to a close cooperation between them. According to the quoted source, Gorgan was regularly reporting about the political situation in Moldova, sending data on visits to Chisinau by representatives of the Defence Ministry from Ukraine, as well as procurements of weapons for the Ukrainian army.   

Following the publication of the information, the Moldovan Presidency informed that head of state, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Maia Sandu would withdraw the state distinctions and the military ranks of the former head of the National Army’s General Staff, general Igor Gorgan.  

At the same time, on 5 June evening, information appeared, according to which the former head of the Moldovan Army’s General Staff, Igor Gorgan, was suspended from the office of head of security of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Moldova, United Nations Refugee Agency.
