No increase in radiation levels following fire at Zaporozhia power plant
Chisinau, March 4 / MOLDPRES /- Moldovan authorities announced today that, in the context of the fire at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine, there is no increase in radiation levels and there is no danger to the population.
A fire broke out in one of the buildings of the energy complex amid armed clashes near the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant near Energodar (about 550 km southeast of Kyiv). The fire, although strong, was quickly extinguished, and is now completely extinguished. The building affected by the fire is not related to the technological part of the plant, being a staff training facility, according to a Reuters statement.
The International Atomic Energy Agency announces that the radiation level in the area is normal and continues to monitor it.
Data from the Ministry of Environment show that the level of radiation in the Republic of Moldova does not increase. "We will continue to monitor radiation levels and regularly report changes in the radioactive background," the institution said.
The Chisinau government is appealing for calm and urging the population to get information exclusively from verified sources.
