Moldovan labour minister announces set of measures to prevent minors from leaving home

The General Police Inspectorate (IGP) last year registered over 2,000 cases in which children left home. In the context, Labour and Social Protection Minister Natalia Plugaru today announced a set of measures to prevent this phenomenon.

The official emphasized that the data was worrying and showed an increase, while the main reasons for leaving home appear to be conflictual relationships with parents or peers.

“Police investigate each case individually, in order to establish the circumstances. For our part, we will strengthen social assistance for children who are in risk situations. Thus, at present, we have 254 specialists in the protection of children’s rights, who are in communities and who help these families. We aim to increase their number to at least 300 this year,” stated Natalia Plugaru.

Another measure envisages expanding the number of programmes meant for parents.

“Presently, child upbringing is different from what it was a few years ago. Children are also exposed to risks that persist in the online environment or to bullying. For this reason, a different type of upbringing is needed from parents. Likewise, social protection specialists work with school psychologists and teachers, so that we can provide greater protection to minors. Children belong in families; therefore, it is necessary to expand social support services,” added the minister.

Last year, 2,024 cases of voluntary departure were recorded, involving 870 children, of whom 656 represent single cases of leaving home, while 214 children were involved in two or more departures. All children were identified and safely returned to the competent authorities.
