Wrestler Irina Rîngaci wins gold medal at World University Championship in Brazil
Freestyle wrestler Irina Rîngaci won the gold medal at the World University Championship Combat Sports held in Brazil, bringing the Republic of Moldova a new international title and the third medal obtained by our country’s delegation at this competition.
The Moldovan athlete climbed to the top step of the podium in women’s wrestling. The achievement is all the more important as it represents the first major trophy won by Irina Rîngaci after her return to competition, following a knee injury suffered last year, which kept her away from major tournaments for an extended period.
Another gold medal for the Republic of Moldova was won by Mihaela Samoil, who became world university champion in the 55 kg category. In the final, she delivered a dominant performance and defeated the Canadian representative with a decisive score of 10–0.
The World University Championship Combat Sports is taking place these days in the capital of Brazil, where the Republic of Moldova is represented by eight athletes in freestyle wrestling, women’s wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Muay Thai.
The delegation includes Sergiu Lupașco, Constantin Chirilov, and Ion Damian in freestyle wrestling, Irina Rîngaci and Mihaela Samoil in women’s wrestling, Alexandru Solovei and Gabriel Lupașco in Greco-Roman wrestling, as well as Andrei Avramov in Muay Thai.
