Moldova to launch new auctions for construction of renewable energy plants
A new round of auctions for the construction of renewable energy production plants is scheduled for October 2025. This will include, for the first time, an energy storage component.
The auction due in next autumn targets projects for the construction of wind farms with a total estimated capacity of up to 173 MW, as well as the integration of energy storage solutions with a minimum of 44 MWh.
The action plan for organizing auctions to grant large eligible producer status for the period 2025-2026 has been recently approved by the government. The document ensures predictability and transparency, providing investors, including international ones, with the necessary information to participate under optimal conditions in the award procedures.
According to the schedule approved by the cabinet, the process of drafting the auction documentation and consulting it with the business environment is planned for the period July–October 2025. The submission of bids is estimated for January-March 2026, and their evaluation and the designation of winners is expected for June 2026.
According to statistics data, in the last five years, photovoltaic and wind generation capacities have increased eightfold, reaching 689 MW in last May.
The first auction for the setting of large wind and photovoltaic parks, with a total capacity of 165 MW, has been recently concluded. This will attract 200 million euros of investment over the next three years.
Moldova has set a target to reach a 30-per cent share of renewable energy in electricity consumption and a 27-per cent share of renewable energy in final energy consumption by 2030. In 2024, the share of renewable electricity was 16.7 per cent, and it is estimated to increase to 27 per cent this year.
