Three problem banks of Moldova no longer accept new deposits
Chisinau, 7 August /MOLDPRES/ - The three banks (Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala and Unibank), which are under special administration, no longer accept demand and term deposits by opening new accounts, as well as extension of old contracts starting from today. On 6 August, the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) approved a decision, thereby banning the three banks from accepting new deposits from private persons and legal entities.
BNM also prohibited prolongation of deposits created till 6 earlier August, conclusion of new agreements and extension of earlier concluded contracts, related to providing of services by Banca de Economii as to social payments and salary payment via banking cards.
Those three banks placed announcements on the decision to no longer make deposit operations on their official webpages.
At a meeting on 5 August, the Committee for Financial Stability spoke out for the liquidation of the aforementioned three banks. The decision is rather a recommendation for BNM. Thus, the final decision on liquidation of the three banks will be taken by the central bank.
„We negotiated a Memorandum between the government and the National Bank on the actions governmental institutions must undertake as to correct and balanced transfer of treasury accounts, obligations on payment of pensions and other social payments, as well as BNM's obligations. These measures are to lead to a recovery of the Moldovan banking system,” Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet said.
