Two more African swine fever outbreaks in Ungheni and Strășeni

Two more outbreaks of African swine fever have been registered in Moldova. One outbreak was reported among domestic pigs in Rădenii Vechi, Ungheni district, and another outbreak involving nine wild boar carcasses in Lozova, Strășeni district.

The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) announced that quarantine measures have been introduced in the swine fever outbreaks and the protection and surveillance zones have been established. Specialists are conducting control of wild reservoirs, monitoring animal movement within the country, and screening domestic pigs and wild boar populations.

According to statistics, between 2016 and 2025, 265 infected wild boar carcasses have been found in Moldova.

ANSA warns that the risk of swine fever outbreaks occurring, both in domestic pigs and wild boars, remains a threat and therefore urges the population and all farmers not to use animal-origin food waste for pig feed and to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease that affects only domestic pigs and wild boars but is not dangerous for humans! More than 90% of infected animals die. There is no vaccine or treatment for African swine fever. The virus can survive for a long time in the meat and organs of infected animals.
