The first meeting of the 2026 year of the environmental protection Working Groups today was held via videoconference, at Chisinau’s initiative, with the participation of specialized experts from both banks of the Dniester River.

According to the meeting’s agenda, experts from the Environment Ministry, the Environment Agency, the Environmental Protection Inspectorate, the Public Institution National Administration “Apele Moldovei” (Moldova’s Waters), the Moldsilva Forestry Agency and the State Hydrometeorological Service addressed issues related to the implementation of national legislation aligned with the requirements of the European regulatory framework on environmental protection, ensuring property rights over real estate owned by the state, as well as matters related to air, water and aquatic environment protection, efficient management of forest resources, waste management and pollutant emissions.

In the context, representatives of the national authorities informed the Tiraspol representatives about the need to ensure property rights and efficient use of real estate in the municipality of Bender belonging to the Moldsilva Agency, by removing obstacles in their administration.

The experts from Tiraspol were also informed about the launch in Moldova in 2026, with financial support from development partners, of the National Forest Inventory process, which is an essential tool for assessing and monitoring the country’s forest resources. The importance of this exercise was highlighted, as well as the benefits of including the forest fund on the left bank of the Dniester River in the inventory process.

During the dialogue, experts from Chisinau again presented detailed arguments on the importance of involving economic entities from the Transnistrian region in the environmental reporting process, particularly in terms of waste management and pollutant emissions. They explained the legal procedures and the need to develop national emission inventories in line with European standards in this field.

The participants in the meeting exchanged opinions and information on the measures undertaken to ensure the protection and quality of atmospheric air, as well as on monitoring emissions from industrial activities.

Accordingly, Tiraspol representatives were informed about the activities carried out by state institutions to install in the locality of Varnita, Anenii Noi district, an advanced automatic urban background air quality monitoring station, within the project, Facilitating an inclusive green transition in Moldova”, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme and financed by the European Union. The station will enable transparent assessment of pollution levels, identification of impact sources and will provide objective data for protecting the health of the population on both banks of the Dniester. At the same time, it will serve as a solid basis for planning coordinated actions to reduce industrial emissions where necessary.

Additionally, the sides addressed topics concerning the application of national environmental legislation to economic operators from the left bank of Dniester  registered with the Public Services Agency, measures taken to prevent pollution of the Dniester River basin, combating poaching and protecting aquatic biological resources.

The discussions held during the meeting were constructive, with experts expressing openness to further examine issues of common interest, continue information exchange and work towards resolving existing problems in the field of environmental protection.
