Moldovan President: We must protect children in virtual sphere as well
On Safer Internet Day, President Maia Sandu delivered a message on the importance of protecting children in the digital environment and announced the launch of a national dialogue on this topic.
“Our children are growing up in a world that is very different from the one we grew up in. Real social life, with friends, colleagues, family is gradually being replaced by an online life – inauthentic, without physical presence, without genuine relationships,” the head of state said.
At the same time, the President drew attention to the risks present online: “The internet brings opportunities, but also increasingly serious risks: anxiety, social pressure, sleep disorders, harmful content. More and more evidence shows us that the situation is alarming,” the head of state noted.
Maia Sandu said that consultations will be held with parents, teachers, doctors, psychologists and youth representatives to identify the best solutions to reduce risks in the digital space. “Just as we protect children in everyday life, we must also take care of them in the virtual sphere. The internet must not be a danger to them, but a space where they can develop,” the head of state underlined.
Safer Internet Day is an initiative of the European Commission, launched in 2004. The event is now marked in about 190 countries and territories around the world.
