Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has paid tribute to more than 12,500 Moldovans who had taken part in the war in Afghanistan. Thousands of young people from villages and cities across Moldova were mobilized by the Soviet army and forced to fight in a foreign conflict. Three hundred and one of them never returned home and many others were severely wounded.

“The experience of those years left us with a clear lesson: war brings no winners. It destroys destinies, tears families apart and hinders the development of societies. Peace, on the other hand, is the fundamental condition for life, freedom and progress. With a war at our country’s border, our responsibility is even greater: to protect peace at home,” the prime minister stated.

The state provides support and social protection to those who survived the war in Afghanistan, as well as to the families of those who died. On the eve of the national day of remembrance, people with disabilities resulting from the war in Afghanistan and the family members of those who fell on the battlefield receive a material aid of 1,000 lei. The funds are transferred to the beneficiaries’ bank cards or can be collected at post offices across the country.

Additionally, these categories of citizens receive a monthly state allowance of 1,914 lei, from which approximately 27,316 people benefit at present.

February 15 is declared in Moldova as the Day of commemoration of those who fell in the war in Afghanistan.
