Acting Prime Minister: I will continue my duty until new Government is sworn in

After announcing his resignation as prime minister at the end of last week, Alexandru Munteanu said today that most of the scenarios circulating about his departure from the head of the Executive are false and specified that he will continue to carry out his duties until a new Cabinet of Ministers is sworn in.

He avoided giving details about the reasons for his departure.

“I understand that a controversy is expected. Ninety percent of the scenarios that have been circulated are not true. It is a more complicated story. Time will put things in their place. I did what I had to do. I am continuing my duty. I am ensuring a smooth transition. We are in the process of European integration and we cannot afford to deviate or create controversial situations. We continue to work, that’s all,” Munteanu said.

According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, when the prime minister resigns, the entire Government resigns. At the same time, the supreme law stipulates that, in the event of the prime minister’s resignation, the Executive performs only the functions of administering public affairs until the members of a new Government take the oath of office.

Today, President Maia Sandu announced the start of consultations with parliamentary factions for nominating a candidate for the position of prime minister. The Party of Socialists and the Alternative National Movement Party have announced that they will not take part in the consultations.
