Speaker after Prime Minister’s resignation: We will launch discussions on necessary key reforms and carefully analyze society’s expectations

After the resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, Speaker Igor Grosu announced that the PAS faction will begin internal consultations in the coming days on the key reforms needed for the benefit of citizens, emphasizing that the priority remains the continuation of the Republic of Moldova’s accession process to the European Union.

The position was expressed after the head of state, Maia Sandu, announced that next week she will launch consultations with parliamentary factions to nominate a candidate for the position of Prime Minister.

“President Maia Sandu has announced consultations with the parliamentary factions for next week. The PAS faction will discuss in the coming days the things that need to be done in the next period, including regarding key reforms, fiscal policy, and the wage law. We will listen to several opinions and will carefully analyze society’s expectations,” said Igor Grosu.

The speaker stressed that “the most important thing is to continue without interruption the efforts related to EU accession.” At the same time, Igor Grosu thanked Alexandru Munteanu for his work.

“We thank Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu for agreeing to take office during an intense period for our country and for the efforts made together with the other colleagues in the Government,” said Igor Grosu.

On the morning of the same day, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced that he was stepping down after eight months in office. Shortly afterward, President Maia Sandu held a press conference in which she announced the launch of consultations with the parliamentary factions to nominate a candidate for the position of Prime Minister. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, in the event of the resignation of the Prime Minister, the entire Government resigns. At the same time, the supreme law provides that in the event of the Prime Minister’s resignation, the Executive performs only the functions of managing public affairs until the members of a new Government are sworn in.
