Speaker on prime minister’s office: We are discussing within party. This week we will present our candidate

Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) leader, Speaker Igor Grosu said today that internal discussions are underway within the party regarding the nomination of a candidate for the position of prime minister, without providing specific names at this time.

Asked whether he is considering the possibility of taking over the leadership of the Government, Igor Grosu avoided a direct answer, stressing that decisions will be made during the party’s internal consultations and later presented to President Maia Sandu.

“I thank my colleagues for their attention to political processes. We will take all opinions into account and will have discussions within the party, and when we go to consultations we will come with PAS’s proposal,” Igor Grosu said.

He underlined that in consolidated democracies, party leaders can assume governmental positions, but decisions must be adapted to the political context of the Republic of Moldova.

“It is a democratic practice. All practice must be adapted to realities on the ground,” he stated.

According to Grosu, during a recent meeting of the PAS parliamentary faction several scenarios regarding the future prime minister were examined, including the possibility that this person could come from within the party or from outside the formation.

“On Saturday we had a faction meeting. We discussed potential candidates and what is also being discussed in society – a prime minister from within the party or from outside it. It was an exchange of views, without discussing specific names,” the PAS leader noted.

Igor Grosu refused to provide details about the individuals being considered for the position of prime minister, mentioning that the consultation process is still ongoing.

“I am not going to give you names, even if the interest is legitimate and very high. I believe that this week we will have more clarity and we will come forward with our candidate,” he said.

At the end of last week, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced that he is stepping down after eight months in office. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, in the event of the resignation of the prime minister, the entire Government resigns. At the same time, the supreme law stipulates that, in case of the prime minister’s resignation, the Executive only performs the functions of managing public affairs until the members of a new Government are sworn in.

Today, President Maia Sandu announced the launch of consultations with parliamentary factions to nominate a candidate for the position of prime minister. The Party of Socialists and the National Alternative Movement Party have announced that they will not participate in the consultations.
