President at requiem rally dedicated to victims of Communist deportations
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu took part today in a requiem rally dedicated to the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communist Deportations, where she paid tribute to the tens of thousands of people who were condemned to suffering.
In her speech, the Head of State stressed that the deportations of 1941, 1949 and 1951 were “crimes planned in the smallest detail, with the aim of destroying our elites and any form of resistance” and urged society to keep alive the memory of these tragedies. “We have a duty to speak more and more often about these tragedies,” the President declared.
Maia Sandu drew attention to the fact that the lessons of the past are still relevant today, referring to the war waged by Russia against Ukraine. “History is repeating itself before our eyes: what the Soviet authorities once did, Putin’s Russia is doing today to Ukrainians. That is precisely why we must remain in solidarity with Ukraine and convince Europe to help Ukraine without cease, so that Russia is stopped and can never again do harm to any other people,” the Head of State said.
In conclusion, the President emphasized that the memory of the victims of the deportations is essential for the future of the Republic of Moldova. “The remembrance of those deported is, therefore, equally about the past, the present and the future. They kept the spirit of our nation alive, and thanks to them we are here today. Let us honor their sacrifice by living with the same dignity, so that our people are never again taken from their homes at night and deported,” Maia Sandu said.
