Constitutional Court confirms result of republican constitutional referendum on Moldova's accession to EU
Chisinau, 31 October /MOLDPRES/ - The Constitutional Court (CC) today confirmed the result of the republican constitutional referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
The decision was pronounced by CC President Domnica Manole, following more hours of deliberations. The decision is final and is published in the Official Journal (Monitorul Oficial). She noted that there had been two separate opinions by magistrates Sergiu Turcan and Vladimir Turcan.
„The Constitutional Court confirms the results of the republican constitutional referendum from 20 October 2024,’’ Manole said.
On 26 October, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) submitted to CC the documents and materials needed for the confirmation of the results of the republican constitutional referendum. It is about the CEC decisions on citizens’ participation in the voting at the referendum, the official reports on the tabulation of the ballot’s results, as well as report of the Commission on the organization and holding of the referendum.
According to the Electoral Code, in a ten-day period, CC considers the acts submitted by the Commission and confirms or invalidates, under a decision, the results of the republican referendum.
At a meeting on 25 October, CEC declared valid the republican constitutional referendum from 20 October and approved the official report on the centralization of the voting’s results.
Thus, based on the official reports on the tabulation of the results of the voting at the referendum, compiled and approved by the constituency electoral councils, the Commission found out a voter turnout of 50.72 per cent. Thus, 1, 532, 264 voters received ballot papers for referendum. A number of 749, 719 votes out of the 1,488, 874 validly expressed ones were for the YES option and 739,155 were for the NO option.
At the republican constitutional referendum from 20 October 2024, the citizens answered the question: ‘’Do you support the Constitution’s amendment for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?’’
The draft on the amendment of Moldova’s Constitution provides for the Constitution’s completion with two new paragraphs, which reconfirm the European identity of Moldova’s people and the irreversibility of the country’s European integration way. Also, Moldova’s integration into the European Union will be declared as the country’s strategic goal.
The republican constitutional referendum was organized at an initiative by Moldova’s President Maia Sandu. The initiative on the revision of Moldova’s Constitution was signed by 46 MPs and was approved by the Constitutional Court.
